AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) explained: how to get cited by AI
Answer engine optimisation is not a new trick. It is the same content discipline search always rewarded, with a clearer reader.
What AEO actually is
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of making a page easy for an AI system to read, trust and quote. Google, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini all do some version of this.
It works alongside CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) so pages convert the search traffic they win.
Three things answer engines look for
A direct first sentence. If your first sentence answers the question in the title, an engine can quote it. If it opens with background, the engine has to infer, and it usually picks a competitor instead.
Facts with a name and a period. "ROAS improved" is not quotable. "Blended ROAS reached 5.2x on the Aryia account in the first quarter" is. Numbers with a source and a timeframe travel further than adjectives.
Structure a crawler can read. One h1, clean heading order, FAQ answers in native details elements, and JSON-LD that matches the visible text word for word. If your schema says something your page does not, engines notice.
What I write on client pages
Every service and industry page I build opens with a two sentence answer block: what this is, and who it is for. Then the problem in the visitor's words. Then the fix. Then proof. Then one next step.
That structure is not decoration. It is what makes a page quotable, and it happens to be what a human buyer wants too.
The part most people skip
Let the AI crawlers in. Check your robots file and confirm that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the others are not blocked. A lot of sites block them by accident through a copied robots file.
Start here
Pick your three most commercial pages. Rewrite the first sentence of each so it answers the page title directly. Add one concrete number with its period. Then check your robots file.

Measurement discipline in practice
AEO only works when the numbers behind your claims are real and dated. The Firstway Global case study shows how that measurement discipline plays out on a live account.
